The ABC preschool program is for children of the women participating in drug and alcohol treatment in the Women and Families Services program who are ages 9 months to five years old.
The program is designed to provide a no-use message to children who are at risk for becoming addicted in the future due to history of prior addiction within their family. The program addresses the following Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) risk factors:
- Individual attitudes towards substance use
- Perceived risk of substance use
- Early initiation of the problem behavior
The curriculum, published by the Alcohol & Drug Addiction Services Board (ADAS) of Cuyahoga County, contains 26 sessions which address topics such as self-esteem, healthy relationships, expression of feelings, healthy living skills, assertiveness, refusal skills, communication skills, problem solving skills, attitudes and consequences of alcohol and other drug use.
