Although many of us know CPR & First Aid, you’re much more likely to encounter someone with mental health symptoms than someone having a heart attack.

WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID?

Recovery Resources is proud to be among the first providers of Mental Health First Aid training in Ohio.  Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an exciting public education program, similar to CPR and First Aid, that helps people identify, understand, and respond to individuals experiencing signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. MHFA was developed to help members of the community support an individual developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

There are two versions of Mental Health First Aid:

  1. Traditional Mental Health First Aid, which teaches participants how to respond to the mental health and substance abuse emergencies experienced by adults
  2. Youth Mental Health First Aid,  which teaches participants how to respond to the signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in adolescents ages 12-18

WHO SHOULD ATTEND MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID?

Traditional Mental Health First Aid
This training is recommended for everyone, especially people who regularly work with the public (healthcare professionals, teachers, retail employees, emergency services workers, customer service professionals, etc), as well as anyone who wants to learn more about mental health and substance use or feel more comfortable assisting someone experiencing a crisis.

Youth Mental Health First Aid
This training is designed for adults who regularly interact with youth and may also be appropriate for older adolescents (16 and older), to encourage peer to peer interaction and support. Anyone who regularly engages with youth (teachers, athletic coaches, guidance counselors, youth group advisors, mentors, juvenile justice professionals, etc.) will find the course content useful.

WHAT DO PARTICIPANTS LEARN?

Both Traditional and Youth Mental Health First Aid Teach:

  • Basic knowledge of the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems
  • A 5-step action plan encompassing the skills to assess a situation, select and implement appropriate interventions, and help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional care
  • Understanding of the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced stigma
  • Working knowledge of the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem achieve recovery
